Week Seven

This week started a bit slow. I arrived five minutes early which usually isn't an issue because I simply pick up where I left off on a project and continue until my boss and or Erica give me a different assignment. However, I had finished all previous assignments and now sat at my desk killing time waiting for either my boss or Erica to arrive and let me know what it was I was to work on that week. This waiting took a bit longer than I would have liked, but in this time I was able to answer some emails.

Once Erica finally arrived, she asked me asked to transfer information from a horizontal layout into a vertical one. This didn't take too long but I did have to ask for permission to get into the image server of the company.

Another task I was asked to do this week was to look into transferring information from an Excel sheet and creating a data base from which to easily find this information. This took a lot of work since I have never before created any type of database. But after some online research as well as asking my business school friends back home, I had various solutions. One after another I tried. Most failed because they were either too confusing to figure out or they didn't have the tools I was looking for in a search engine database. Finally, I came to the solution of making a private website with interlinking links to said information. Creating this took a very long time but in the end it looked very clean and professional. Unfortunately, Erica decided (after having shown her the short preview) that transferring all the information from the data sheet would take too long. Thus, I am still on the lookout for an easy database forming program.

This week was very busy with independent research (specifically when looking into all that database work), but what still continues to amaze me is all the varied jobs that I am asked to do and they do themselves and how it all interconnects through the different companies/projects they work for and the different departments at the company of my internship. As always, I expect the following weeks to be just as busy and with just or more varied work. I am a bit bummed that my website idea didn't pan out, though. It was really fun creating it from scratch (that is after I got the hang of how the program ran). I do hope that through my continuous research I will find a good and easy program from which to better create the data base, which will continue to be part of my job here at my internship.

Week Four

This past week at my internship was a great learning experience. I had the chance to have breakfast with everyone in the office on Wednesday morning. Despite my limited Italian, I was able to get to know everyone in the office better as well as connect with them in a less official setting. I am looking forward to more of these types of mini events within the office . Another great learning experience for me this past week was that for the first time since I started this internship, I was asked to partake in the "real" consulting work that they do. I was put in charge of a program. I was to analyse the data they had collected (with the help of Erica, a full time employee who has done this type of work countless time before). I was to analyse the data and brainstorm solutions to the problems the company that had hired the consulting company I am interning for. Once I had come up with some solutions, I shared them with Erica who have me her notes and together we compiled a ...

Welcome to my internship experience abroad! I am currently studying abroad in Rome, Italy, where besides taking 6 classes I am also partaking in an unpaid internship. This blog is dedicated to recording said experience.

Week Five

After having been MIA due to bronchitis last week, I returned to my internship to find that they had waited for me to return in order to continue on the project I had been a part of. This made me feel very proud because it showed that I was in fact part of the team and that my presence made a difference. This was an unexpected feeling because when I began the internship I mistakenly believed as if they were doing my university a favor by allowing me to be there. As if my presence was almost an inconvenience for them because I'd slow them down. Obviously, I was mistaken and coming back to them having waited for me was appreciated it. This week my duties involved  going through a PowerPoint and making it "sexier" (that was the word Erica used when she asked for my help).  She wanted me to make her presentation more modern and appealing. I went through every slide and changed the type of animation (the kind she had was too crazy and distracting). I also switched up the co...
